This Jacket Makes a Strong Case for a New Class of Outerwear

Flint and Tender’s York Quilted Waxed Jacket combines waxed canvas and puffy insulation into a great-looking hybrid coat.

Waxed jackets are always appealing for their excellent rain resistance (when properly maintained) and classic styling.

Down and synthetic puffy mid-layers offer fantastic warmth with minimal weight and bulk.

Given the complementary strengths of these outerwear pieces, it’s surprising that Flint and Tinder’s York Quilted Wax Jacket is one of the only jackets I’ve ever seen that attempts to combine the two styles, at least in this way.

Yes, many brands have merged waxed canvas with insulated layers in the past. I know that Filson has sold versions of the Down Cruiser for years. Last month, we also highlighted a version from Patagonia that made waxed canvas look almost like a technical rainshell.

Flint and Tinder’s take on the combo is much better-looking to me, or at least seems more compatible with a wider range of personal styles.

It features a quilted nylon liner filled with recycled Primaloft and an interior chest pocket to hold a phone and wallet. There’s also a locker loop for hanging.

The exterior is made from waxed canvas supplied by Halley Stevensons for durability, with soft-brush moleskin-lined hand warmer pockets for a touch of comfort. Like all authentic waxed jackets, it can be re-waxed to maintain its water resistance, and the collar features extra support to wear up or down.

It’s available in three colors with contrasting linings, which can add a nice pop to the jacket’s look while wearing the sleeves slightly rolled up. The Dark Navy version features a contrasting olive-colored lining, while the Dark Olive and Field Tan versions appear to share the same chocolate-colored lining.

The total package looks like a compelling cross between Patagonia’s down sweater and a streamlined take on Flint and Tinder’s uber-popular waxed trucker jacket. Remarkably, it also costs essentially the same as either option on its own.

Flint and Tinder York Quilted Waxed Jacket

This is one of the most interesting takes on a waxed jacket we’ve seen in a long time. It combines a puffer jacket’s light and warm insulation with the tried-and-true weather resistance of a waxed canvas jacket. Plus, it includes other nice modern touches like an interior phone pocket, a hanging loop, snap tab adjusters at the waist and cuff, and a reinforced collar that can be worn up or down.
