One of 2024’s Most Fascinating Jackets Is Finally on Sale

I’m still surprised that more brands haven’t tried blending these two popular jacket styles together.

Last fall, I blabbered on that Flint and Tinder’s York Quilted Waxed Jacket made a strong case for a new class of outerwear, and I still stand by that statement.

Now that 2025 is here, it’s also safe to call the York Quilted Waxed Jacket one of, if not the most, interesting new waxed canvas jackets of 2024, and that’s not for lack of competition. Nearly every outerwear heavyweight launched some incredible new pieces last year.

The York Quilted Waxed Jacket could easily be mistaken for a higher-end quilted jacket from afar. But its waxed canvas exterior provides an additional textured and classic-looking edge that’s more apparent up close.

Huckberry

Patagonia launched a lightweight waxed cotton jacket that looked like a technical rain shell last year. Barbour gave arguably the most iconic waxed canvas jacket on earth a significant update. Filson released its second collaboration with one of America’s top cult raincoat makers.

So what exactly makes the York Quilted Waxed Jacket stand out over these releases? It’s the best attempt I’ve seen at combining the lightweight warmth and versatile cut of a traditional puffer jacket mid-layer with the famed weather resistance (and longevity) of a classic waxed canvas jacket.

Flint and Tinder also integrated a bevy of welcomed modern touches, like an interior chest pocket for a phone, snap adjusters at the waist and cuffs for tweaking the fit, a hanging loop and hidden snap closures on the hand pockets. The collar is also reinforced, so you can wear it up or down.

Is this jacket the perfect execution of the idea? No. Before getting into the details, the feel of waxed canvas doesn’t appeal to everyone. One could also argue that a heavier waxed canvas outer layer almost defeats the point of lighter puffer insulation. And while we’re on the topic of insulation, I’d have loved to see Flint and Tinder use an upgraded synthetic like PrimaLoft, but that would also probably jack up the price.

Still, as long as you know what you’re getting into on the front, the York Quilted Waxed Jacket is a versatile, sleek-looking, and light(ish) shell that can battle three seasons’ worth of elements with the help of additional layering in the dead of winter. And since its shell is waxed canvas, it should patina and last as long as you care for it.
