Rather than going the traditional route, Flint and Tinder teamed up with the leading brand in modern camouflage design for a four-piece collection.

Huckberry’s in-house menswear line took four of its best-selling basics and made them in a camouflage pattern from Realtree. The limited edition collection includes a hoodie, a pocket tee, a long-sleeve tee and shorts.

This collaboration perfectly represents how Flint and Tinder overlaps inspiration from urban fashion and rural leisure. It is just as much at home in the brand’s native Austin as it is in the vast Texas wilderness.

A bold move

Realtree is the most respected name in camouflage gear for hunting and outdoor recreation. It was founded in 1986 with the goal of creating patterns with photo-realistic elements taken from natural landscapes that completely obscure the human figure.

While Realtree is no stranger to collaborations, having worked with companies like Crocs and Waffle House, the company does not have a history in contemporary menswear. Working with Flint and Tinder is an outside-the-box move for both parties.

The items in the collection may be simple, but using one of Realtree’s Edge camo patterns creates bold pieces that fit perfectly with Flint and Tinder’s existing collection. The Camo Fleece Hoodie looks great under a Waxed Trucker Jacket, and the Camo Pocket T-shirt pairs well with 365 Pants.

With this collection, Flint and Tinder is making a strong case that fashion brands should embrace new types of camouflage.

Camo blends in

When menswear brands use camo, it is almost always pulled from Cold War-era military uniforms. Occasionally, you’ll see the tiger stripe variety worn during the Vietnam War or the desert variety from Operation Desert Storm, but nothing modern outdoorsmen would consider effective.

In a way, that’s the point. Camouflage patterns have evolved exponentially over the past thirty years, rendering anything found in a military surplus store or vintage shop obsolete for obscuration. However, having a rich history in civilian use means that those outdated textures are still in use.

Twentieth-century military camo patterns have been relegated to the realm of fashion. They are just another swatch for clothing designers to choose from, like polka dots and paisley.

Ironically, using a traditional camo can easily blend into the menswear landscape because they are so common. If a brand like Flint and Tinder, which is rapidly growing in both scale and notoriety, wants to get noticed, using a complex modern camouflage is a smart choice.
