Filson’s Latest Raincoat Collab Is a Waxed Canvas Masterpiece

Thanks to a darker color scheme, the second edition of the Filson x Freeman Raincoat feels even more collection-worthy.

Seattle-based Freeman is the kind of company you cannot help but root for. The brand’s startup lore reads like a movie script.

Recently, the brand teamed up with Filson (again) to release a second special edition of its flagship raincoat using Filson’s legendary materials.

The result is one of the classiest waxed canvas rain jackets I’ve seen, with all the ingredients to reach collector status in the years ahead.

It’s Based on a Cult Raincoat Born in the Pacific Northwest

Freeman

Freeman began as a kitchen table project by Scott and Brittany Freeman, a husband-and-wife duo living in a small Seattle apartment in 2011.

As the story goes, Scott’s beloved vintage North Face jacket had finally worn out, and there was no chance of replacing it. So the duo set out to design their own “perfect” Seattle raincoat with little sewing experience using Brittany’s grandmother’s sewing machine.

The result was a raincoat hand-crafted in Seattle, inspired by classic hiking slickers. It was made from a waterproof nylon shell and lined with cozy flannel.

Like many great products, the jacket’s reputation grew quickly through word of mouth and was soon revered by fans of American-made goods and outerwear nerds. As sales steadily climbed, Scott and Brittany eventually decided to make what was once a side hustle a full-time gig, complete with a retail location that opened in 2014

While Freeman’s product line has since expanded into other clothing staples over the last decade, the raincoat continues to be made in America in minimal quantities (at least by modern industrial standards), with new colors and slight iterations selling out quickly each season.

Further Collaboration With Filson Felt Inevitable

The Filson x Freeman rain jacket collaboration released in the fall of 2023. The jacket is made from a greenish brown waxed canvas and features a bright black and yellow checked flannel interior. The jacket is shown laying flat with the right side flipped slightly open to reveal the lining.
The first Filson x Freeman rain jacket launched in 2023. Its dark brown waxed canvas exterior and bright yellow checked lining offered warm, earthy vibes.
Filson

Given Freeman’s Seattle roots and commitment to local manufacturing, you couldn’t cook up a better collaborator with Filson in a lab.

The seemingly inevitable collaboration came in the fall of 2023. The two companies launched a six-piece collection consisting of Freeman silhouettes made from Filson heritage fabrics. The showcase item was, naturally, a version of the Freeman Raincoat

The special version of the jacket was made from Filson’s lightest oil-finished waxed cotton, a.k.a. Cover Cloth, and featured a lining made from Filson’s Alaskan Guide shirt line

The Second Iteration Looks Even More Modern and Appealing

The fresh take on the collaborative jacket follows a blueprint similar to the first edition but with a slightly more modern color scheme.

It’s again made from Filson’s Cover Cloth, this time in dark navy instead of brown. As with all waxed cotton clothing, regular waxing can maintain and restore the jacket’s water resistance.

The new version of the Filson x Freeman Raincoat is technically dark navy, but you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for black. The dark blue and orange lining pattern complements it nicely, adding a brighter pop.

The wool lining is also smartly implemented to look and feel great. In this case, it’s 18-oz Seattle Wool, the same fabric used in Filson’s original tweener jacket-shirt hybrid, a.k.a. the Jac-Shirt

For aesthetics and feel, the warm and attractive lining is smartly limited to the torso, hood, and hand pockets. The sleeves are lined with lightweight cotton canvas so that they slide easily over other layers.

The lining of the 2025 edition of the Filson x Freeman Wool Lined Raincoat is the same 18-oz Seattle Wool, a midweight fabric introduced in Filson’s original Jac-Shirt five decades earlier. We appreciate that the jacket features a different light canvas liner in the sleeves, which makes it easy to slip on over other layers.

Since the jacket initially launched amid the crush of the December holiday season, it immediately sold out on Freeman’s site.

But shockingly, Filson still has medium and large sizes available from the 200 jacket run. Just as an FYI, Filson also notes that the raincoat fits slightly trimmer than the classic relaxed fit.

Filson x Freeman Wool Lined Raincoat

This is the second collaborative rain jacket from Freeman and Filson. It’s a special edition of the cult rain jacket made by Freeman, which hand-crafts its garments in Seattle. It swaps the original Freeman Jacket’s nylon shell and flannel lining for Filson’s heritage Cover Cloth waxed canvas in a dark navy color, as well as the 18-oz Seattle Wool that’s been used in Filson’s Jac-Shirt for over five decades.
