Filson’s Mackinaw Cruiser is a time-tested, legendary winter jacket. But it isn’t much good once the weather warms up. Fortunately, a new addition to the Cruiser line fills that gap.

The newly released Field Cruiser Jacket is a stripped-down, welterweight version of the Seattle outfitter’s most iconic jacket, offering the same utility as the rest of the Cruiser collection, with the added versatility of a shirt jacket.

Three-season range

The new jacket is made from 9.5-ounce cotton fabric modeled after the canvas used in vintage military apparel. It comes in a green colorway resembling vintage M51 US Army jackets, as well as a weathered navy blue for a washed denim look. The fabric is soft and breathable but tough enough to bear the Filson name.

It has almost the same pocket layout as the Mackinaw Cruiser, with only the back panel pocket missing. This means that the Field Cruiser offers more carrying capacity than the aesthetically similar M65 jacket and significantly outperforms any chore coat.

The Field Cruiser’s simple single-layer construction makes it optimal for layering. As the weather gets warmer, it can go from a functional outer layer to a standalone jacket and then a work shirt.

Over 100 years of heritage

Filson patented the Cruiser jacket design in 1914. It was designed for foresters in the Pacific Northwest and became a favorite among generations of outdoorsmen throughout the 20th century. Today, it remains a workwear stalwart, cherished for its hardwearing construction and timeless looks.

The burly wool used in the original design is insulating, weather-resistant, and damn near indestructible. Combined with eight strategically placed pockets, it is also one of the most useful jackets ever designed.

Multiple versions of the Cruiser Jacket have come about over the years, including one made from Filson’s signature 14-ounce oiled Tin Cloth. But all of them — with the exception of the new Field Cruiser Jacket — have been too heavy for warm weather.

Availability and pricing

The Filson Field Cruiser Jacket is available now for $250 as part of the Spring ’25 collection but it looks to be a permanent addition to the Cruiser collection.
