Converse Takes the All Star Sneaker to a Place It’s Never Been Before

What does the Chuck Taylor All Star have in common with a pair of cowboy boots? At first glance, not much. Yet, you could make the case that both American classics span decades and demographics.

Since the early 1900s, All Stars have made their way onto the feet of everyone from Wilt Chamberlain to Kurt Cobain. As for cowboy boots? Well, they’ve been around a longer than that and continue to find new fans today.

If the through line still seems like a stretch, how’s this? All Stars and cowboy boots both shaped one of Converse’s wildest designs ever: the All Star Western Boots ST Z.

The upcoming Converse is exactly what it sounds like — the classic Chuck Taylor All Star turned into a cowboy boot.

With a full-length upper, it gives new meaning to the concept of a “high top.” Exclusive to Japan at launch, it comes in two finishes, brown or black suede.

This isn’t the first time Converse has toyed with the All Star. It’s not even the first Western-inspired version.

However, the All Star Western Boots II Z Hi from yesteryear were more sneaker than boot. They also lacked some of the traditional detailing that make the new All Star Western Boots ST Z rodeo-ready, including Western-style stitching and pull tabs, here embossed with the Converse logo.

That all said, the new boot should feel like a Chuck Taylor All Star underfoot, considering it comes with the shoe’s iconic rubber sole (sans heel, of course).

Pricing and availability

The All Star Western Boots ST Z will release later this month at Converse Japan for the price of ¥20,900 — about $140. For the novelty alone, let’s hope it one day it makes the tip out west.
