This watch borrows its styling from one of its fan-favorite siblings, but it is far more capable when it comes to underwater exploration.

Regarding budget-friendly dive watches, few brands can stand alongside Seiko. But Citizen comes very, very close. While Seiko undoubtedly has the edge in styling, Citizen holds its own with its watches’ capabilities.

The brand has further proven its prowess with its latest, the Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Professional Diver 300m. Boasting fan-favorite styling, this watch gets a new movement that’s seriously impressive in more ways than one.

Fan-favorite styling

If this watch looks familiar to you, especially if you’re already a Citizen fan, that’s probably because its styling is borrowed mainly from the BN0150-28E. It’s a fan-favorite that’s been a staple of the brand’s catalog for years.

You can definitely see the similarities in the ISO-compliant case, with its offset crown and rotating dive timer bezel. Furthermore, the shape of the hands and dial markers are identical, although the minute hand is colored differently.

However, there are some notable differences. The dial color of this new option, for instance, is available in shimmery red instead of the standard flat colors of the original. It also has a plant-based polyurethane strap now integrated into the case.

Furthermore, the bezel and case itself are both much thicker. While that’s technically a stylistic change, it likely has more to do with the increased capabilities of this new release.

This watch has a very thick case, but that’s because it’s rated for saturation diving at depths of up to 300m.

Dive deeper for longer

The biggest innovation with this new release is the watch’s movement. The new engine — Cal.E365 — is more capable than its predecessors in numerous ways.

For starters, the watch is now rated for saturation diving. Unlike its stylistic inspiration, which was rated at 200m, this one is good for another hundred, totaling 300m. That makes it far more capable as a genuine dive watch. But that’s just one of the major changes.

The other, arguably more important, impressive alteration is in its power reserve. According to Citizen, the battery can run for a jaw-dropping 365 days on a full charge. That’s a full year.

Better still, the solar-powered movement can be charged via the sun or any artificial light source. However, even if you keep it in pitch-black conditions for a full year, it should still keep ticking all the way through.
