You’ve likely seen Barbour’s Bedale in every roundup of the best waxed cotton outerwear and most iconic jackets on the internet, including right here at Gear Patrol.

All of those lists included the standard-issue Bedale made with Sylkoil waxed canvas, distinguished by its shiny appearance and vented hand-warmer pockets on the upper chest.

However, there are many variations of the Bedale, and Todd Snyder is selling a particularly useful and uncommon one right now. Better still, it is substantially discounted as part of the New York retailer’s massive summer sale.

The Barbour OS Peached Bedale has a softer feel and lighter weight, thanks to a particular type of cotton fabric that undergoes a special mechanical treatment before being impregnated with wax (that’s the actual technical term).

The other significant change is the pocket arrangement, which swaps out the vented handwarmers for a pair of horizontal vented flap pockets with double snap closures.

Otherwise, this jacket features all of the key elements that have made the Bedale one of the most iconic garments, outerwear or otherwise, of all time.

It has a solid brass two-way zipper system (with a hidden trick), dual bellowed pockets with snap-flaps, a storm placket, armpit grommets for ventilation, a double vent back with snaps and an oversized corduroy-lined collar with a throat latch.

It’s a peach!

As the name implies, the OS Peached Bedale is made from peached cotton with a waxed finish. Compared to the standard Sylkoil canvas, it sacrifices a small degree of durability for a softer feel and matte texture.

Peached cotton is a 100-percent cotton fabric, canvas in this case, that has been fed through a machine with tiny spikes that rip up the surface on a microscopic scale.

It creates a uniform soft feel and matte texture because the cotton fibers have been broken, and the broken ends stick up like fur that’s invisible to the naked eye. The name comes from the fact that it feels like the fuzzy outside of a peach.

Barbour utilizes peached waxed cotton to make this Bedale better suited to warm weather than the standard waxed canvas model. The body is only quarter-lined with Barbour’s tartan fabric because the peached version is soft enough that it doesn’t need a liner.

Going International

Where you would typically find the vertical handwarmer pockets, the OS Peached Bedale has horizontal vented pockets with flap closures.

The benefit of this alteration depends on preference. My favorite Barbour jacket is the International for various reasons, but most of all for the cargo capacity.

The shallow vertical handwarmer pockets can be used for stashing small objects like sunglasses, but horizontal flap pockets are bigger and more secure. However, you lose the comfy and convenient space to warm your hands and support your arms.

Availability and pricing

This lighter-weight version of Barbour’s legendary waxed jacket is perfect for chilly summer nights and the shoulder seasons of early fall and late spring. Now is the best time to pick one up for an incredible price.

The Barbour OS Peached Bedale Jacket is available now from Todd Snyder for $319 after the additional 20 percent discount offered on clearance items during the summer sale.
