Dior’s artistic director Kim Jones has been setting the fashion scene ablaze, bridging the gap between couture and streetwear, collaborating with young artists like Daniel Arsham, KAWS, Yoon Ahn and more. He’s mastered the art of collaboration to bring the historic French fashion label to the fore and his latest feat has brought streetwear royalty back from retirement.
It’s been over two decades since Shawn Stussy left his groundbreaking eponymous label in 1996. Since then, he’s been approached by countless names to collaborate and he’s refused just as many. But when Jones made his proposition, Stussy couldn’t stay away.
Made for Dior’s Fall 2020 collection, Stussy’s instantly recognizable handwriting returns in all its Sharpie’d glory, rendered by team Dior in colors befitting of Miami’s Art Basel scene where it will be showcasing another collaboration with RIMOWA. Stussy’s artwork will be seen throughout the collection including pieces that took literally thousands of hours to complete as well as artisanal Japanese printing techniques miles away from the screen-printed tees Stussy fans are used to seeing.
Jones cites himself as a major fan of the brand, having voraciously collected the brand in his teenage years and claiming to still have boxes of vintage original Stussy garments. The collaboration is one of true admiration and respect for streetwear culture and is surely one to watch when it finally drops.
