California made history last Friday when Governor Gavin Newsom signed bill AB44 which bans the manufacturing, selling and distribution of new fur products, making the state the first in the nation to do so. The signing of the bill follows in the wake of similar bans in cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco and includes mink, rabbit, beaver, coyote, fox, chinchilla, sable, lynx and other luxury furs.
The law does make some exceptions. Cowhide, deerskin, sheepskin and goatskin are excluded from the ban as well as furs used for religious purposes and by Native American tribes. The exclusions mean that goose down coats, leather boots and sheepskin bomber jackets will continue to be on store shelves. That still leaves a major portion of fashion sales untouched and though fur sales account for a relatively small percentage of most fashion brand’s revenue, it’s still a win for animal welfare proponents.
The new law is set to be implemented in January 2023 and could potentially set into motion similar legislation in other states. Major brands like Chanel and Burberry have already pledged to go fur-free and some have even gone further to include exotic leathers like snakeskin. Though most California residents aren’t clamoring for mink coats, colder regions who rely on these products more could see greater effects. Fur-trimmed collars and hoods on Canada Goose jackets could be the first to go, and if PETA has their way, the down filling could be next.
