On June 28, Boston-based footwear giant New Balance launched its first sneaker featuring a 3D-printed heel. The 990 Sport silhouette was updated with a TripleCell 3D-printed heel, a lattice structure made from a new photopolymer resin called Rebound Resin. The heel was created with technology from Formlabs, a Massachusetts-based company that specializes in 3D printing (it also has offices in Germany, Japan and China).
The lifestyle-focused 990 Sport TripleCell features a black mono mesh upper, an Encap midsole and a gum rubber outsole. The TripleCell heel gives familiar cushioning but is 10 percent lighter than the traditional 990v5 style. Made in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the style was listed at $185 but has already sold out.
For those hoping to score a new 3D-printed style, New Balance is launching the FuelCell Echo on September 15th with TripleCell technology in the forefoot. The expected price is $175.
