Oakland retailer Standard and Strange collaborated with Oregon bootmaker Wesco on an engineer boot designed to age beautifully. The Wesco Van Cleef III Engineer Boot, based on a style from the ’30s, is made with undyed vegetable-tanned leather. This natural Horween Essex leather will develop a unique patina, darkening with exposure to UV light and absorbing oils and dirt.
The style includes an 11-inch shaft, triple-needle stitch on the vamp and vee-stitchnig on the back stays. It features Nordic brass buckles, naildown construction and a Vibram 700 outsole and heel. And though the $775 price tag may give some people sticker shock, it’s actually quite a deal. Most other brands charge a few hundred dollars more for this style boot.
