California-based clothing brand Outerknown just released a new set of sweats made from one of nature’s strongest plant fibers. The Pavement sweatshirts and sweatpants use a blend of hemp and organic cotton to produce a warm heathered fleece fabric with a brushed interior.
The fabric features 55 percent hemp — one of the strongest vegetable fibers in the world — which is sourced from the Yunnan province of China. Hemp is a big step up from other plant-based fabrics: it’s hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly. It’s resistant to pests, requires little water and has a very short growth cycle. In fact, it’s so easy to grow that it doesn’t even have an organic certification process. For the Pavement sweats, the hemp is blended with organic cotton for a fabric that’s both relatively affordable and incredibly soft from the first wear.
The Pavement Sweatshirt, which retails for $88, features a snap chest pocket, classic fit and ribbed trims. The sweatpants, priced at $98, are cut with a relaxed-tapered fit and include a zippered back pocket and drawstring waist. Both garments come in three colors and are Fair Trade Certified. So if you’re looking for some off-duty garb that’s a cut above, these hit the mark in both materials and manufacturing.
