This Thermo-Sensitive Dyneema Jacket Could Change Technical Wear Forever

Stone Island teams up with ECCO LEATHER for a thermo-sensitive leather and Dyneema layer engineered to conquer cold-weather.

Stone Island’s newest release is more than just a jacket — it’s a proof of concept for Ecco Leather.

A few years ago, Ecco embarked on a project to make leather as dynamic and versatile as newer, synthetic technical fabrics. It didn’t take long for the brand’s special research and development facility in the Netherlands to produce some real stand-outs; first was their translucent, lightweight leather shell called the Apparition Jacket which was quickly followed-up by the Exostrike Dyneema boots. While both were notable products in their own right — they were in-house affairs.

Now, a year after both of those releases, the team at Ecco (along with The Dyneema Project) have been tapped by Stone Island to source material for their wild Ice Jacket in Dyneema Bonded Leather.

Made from a leather bonded with a lightweight non-woven Dyneema fabric and coated with thermosensitive materials, it’s an undeniably unique piece whose color changes with the temperature. Practical for winter or wet-weather wear? At the jacket’s listed price, likely not. But the fact that Ecco was tapped by one of the most prominent streetwear brands on the planet (and one that often uses high-end technical material like GORE-Tex for its jackets) is a real boon for Ecco’s broader project. We’re just hoping we see something in the near future that looks a little less like a mood ring.
