This wearable, functional partnership pays tribute to the brand’s history as an outdoor outfitter.

It can be hard to get excited about yet another designer collaboration, primarily because there are just so many of them on the market. But the latest partnership between The North Face and the legendary Japanese fashion house Comme des Garcons has produced some pretty thrilling clothes and outerwearr for the cold seasons ahead.

And that’s not because they’re overwrought or super-fashiony. Instead, this collaboration — which marks the third time Comme designer Junya Watanabe has worked with The North Face — is notable because it’s wearable and functional. It includes a jacket and coat made from the classic Dolomite 40 sleeping bag, as well as a Trail Pack jacket with a built-in backpack. A few pieces feature an oversized graphic of a climber pulled straight from a van The North Face used to transport gear and riders around California in the 1970s.

Overall, it’s a thoughtful tribute to The North Face’s history as an outdoors outfitter, rendered through the eyes of one of the best-known designers on the planet. As such, everything is made with high-end materials — and comes with high-end prices. You’ll find these pieces for between $2,367 (for the sleeping bag jacket) and $2,727 (for the trail pack jacket) at The North Face’s global flagship store in New York. The other pieces, which will more than likely go for a lower price point, will be available later this year.
