Filson Takes a Shot at Carhartt with an Affordable New Workwear Line

This exciting move from Filson demonstrates that the made-in-America premium brand hasn’t forgotten about its hard-working roots.

Filson has been producing some of America’s best outerwear for over a century, and it’s been worn by everyone from coal miners and railroad workers to genteel sportsmen and city slickers. Their bags are legend; their coats and jackets are revered by everyone who wears them. Over the last couple decades, however, Filson has morphed into something of a luxury brand.

Great quality has always been expensive, but as the company maintained their standards for premium materials and craftsmanship (not to mention the cost of keeping all production in North America), their end product prices began to creep up to a point beyond accessibility for the folks who need protective outerwear the most — working men and women, or avid hunters and outdoors enthusiasts, who spend time outside in the wind, rain and snow. And this has paved the way for less premium-focused companies like Carhartt to dominate much of the workwear market.

But this exciting move from Filson demonstrates that the brand hasn’t forgotten about its hard-wearing roots. The most expensive item from the CCF label tops out at $300, and that’s for a very rugged and capable-looking arctic down parka, the kind of coat that could stand up to almost anything. The rest of the range falls in line well below that, starting with classic winter caps for $24 and fleece-lined crewneck sweatshirts for $85. And some of the other mid-range items include a $95 quilted bomber jacket, which appears to stand on its own as well as function as a liner, plus vests and utility jackets that look every bit as tough as they ought to be.

Expect CCF to land on the shoulders of hard-working folks everywhere (as well as in the closets of many fashion-conscious workwear fiends) very, very soon.
