Brands used to make chunky frames out of necessity — thicker acetate was more stable. But as eyewear manufacturing advanced over the last half-century, improvements to frame technology allowed for slimmer silhouettes. This season, however, a number of brands have taken inspiration from the chunky frames of years past to create modern sunglasses that make a bold statement. When paired with multiple layers and textures in a cool-weather wardrobe, they don’t seem out of place; the extra heft balances a more substantial outfit.
Saint Laurent Bold Sunglasses

Made in Italy, these sunglasses from Saint Laurent have polished black acetate frames offset with subtle branding and silver accents. They feature grey lenses that are 100 percent UV protective.
Jacques Marie Mage Dealan Sunglasses

Jacques Marie Mage makes quite a few chunky-framed pairs, each inspired with unique vintage inspiration. The Dealan — inspired by Bob Dylan — is a hefty Wayfarer-style frame that’s handcrafted in Japan. It features green G-15 lenses and unique hinge rivets.
