Real life guitar hero and style god John Mayer was out and about the other day decked head-to-toe in fresh gear. Frequently seen wearing Visvim and Kapital, the Grammy-award-winning artist’s love of Japanese designers is well-documented.
On July 9, 2020 Mayer was spotted wearing another bonkers ‘fit with suede pull-on boots, a bandana-print pullover shirt, both from Visvim, and washed out denim from Fear of God — just another day in L.A. But his getup also reveals that he’s a fan of vintage clothing and hard-to-find indie labels that make one-off pieces, too. And the colorful L.L. Bean cap he’s rocking doesn’t actually come from the storied Maine outdoors brand, but a brand called Hypeadelic.
Based in Richmond, Virginia, Hypeadelic specializes in making one-of-one hats using vintage garments. While streetwear and outdoor brands like Supreme and Patagonia are more common throughout the collection, designer labels like Gucci and Louis Vuitton also enter the Hypeadelic studio to get flipped into bootleg lids. The brand cleverly cuts up vintage jackets and other garments, using the labels to adorn the front of the five-panel caps. Often, the result is a piece that looks like a legit brand-sanctioned accessory. Other times, these upcycled gems look more like the wild dreams of a hardcore fanboy.
The one that Mayer is sporting uses the shell of a vintage L.L.Bean nylon anorak, its guts fashioned into a colorblock five-panel cap. Its resourceful use of the ornamental strip of webbing accents the front of the hat along with the logo. While this hat is already sold out (remember, they’re one-of-one and we’re looking at the guy who bought said one), Hypeadelic constantly produces pieces in the same vein.
