High Fidelity is a perfect time capsule for the time just before the record store business went down in flames. Rob (John Cusack) is simultaneously managing a failing love life, a failing record store and employees that are too busy espousing the values of Katrina and the Waves to care. Even if you’re not into record stores, lightly sappy romantic comedy or Cusack, High Fidelity is worth watching for Jack Black in his obnoxious, flailing prime. Coincidentally, High Fidelity is a pretty solid standard-bearer for turn-of-the-century style. Whether that era of fading grunge and loose fits that’s seeing a bit of a revival 15 years later is better off left in the past is a debate for a separate article. Here’s how to look the part.
