Zippo has long made a case for Americans to carry its lighters. The Pennsylvania company, which dates back to the 1930s, used to supply lighters to US military, and millions of American soldiers have brought Zippo lighters into the battlefield. Many still do.

Now the company makes the case for everyone to carry a Zippo — even those who have no need for a traditional lighter. The company’s Bit Safe Lighter Insert, announced late last year and released for the summer, converts the classic Zippo lighter case into a bona fide multitool with myriad uses.

The cleverly designed Bit Safe Lighter Insert replaces the traditional lighter insert of a Zippo with an insert that includes four screwdriver bits: #1 Phillips, #2 Phillips, #2 Flat and T20 Torx.

The bits are secured with magnets, and the bottom of the insert can hold whichever ones are not in-use. Due to the affixed lid of a Zippo case, it’s probably most practical to use the insert outside of the case when tightening or removing screws, as displayed in the picture above.

The insert fits most Zippo cases, with the Slim and 1935 Replica cases being the sole exceptions. It measures 2.14 x 1.43 x 0.48 inches and weighs less than two ounces thanks to its lightweight aluminum construction.

Pricing and availability

Available now, the Bit Safe Lighter Insert gives newfound relevance to the everyday lighter — one of the original pieces of EDC gear. It arrives as the number of smokers across the globe continues to drop, according to the World Health Organization. The Bit Safe Lighter Insert costs $15.

While Zippo produces all of its lighters in the US, the company says the Bit Safe Lighter Insert comes from China, despite displaying the location of its headquarters, Bradford, PA, on the side.
