When snow sports neophytes are contemplating whether to try skiing or snowboarding, I am admittedly biased in favor of the latter, but one of my points is not subjective at all: with a snowboard, you’ve got just one thing to keep track of, rather than four.

One emerging ski brand, however, is dinging my case by dropping that figure to three, or at the very least three and half. Meet Yardsale’s P1 and P2 ski poles, which improve upon the basic design with one fundamental upgrade: the addition of magnets.

Rules of attraction

Now, what’s so special about magnets, you ask? Though they won’t prevent the proverbial yardsale while you are actually skiing, they will make your life easier whenever you are moving around the resort with your skis and poles in hand.

The proprietary system, which recently won over yardsale-prone Kendra Scott on Shark Tank, uses magnets in the handles and the baskets to help your poles click together in the parking lot or on the chairlift, making the toting of your equipment just a bit less complicated.

Yardsale’s colorful poles have a few other neat features as well. The straps are constructed using a 3D knitting process which, the brand says, helps them stay open, making it easier for you to get your gloved or mittened hands in and out of them.

The poles are also modular, enabling you to potentially mix and match different hues for your shafts, handles, straps and baskets to make them two of a kind.

In that same spirit, you can also swap out straps for the quick-release MagStrap system (powered by Fidlock), larger Powder Baskets for deeper snow and even a GoPro mount for documenting your own epic yardsales slope stunts.

The second-generation of poles, the P2s, are not only great for resort use but also optimized for backcountry action. The handles, made of Bloom algae foam, are much longer, enabling multiple grips when you are uphilling.

The P2s also feature adjustability from 110 cm to 135 cm at the touch of a button. And they’re collapsible, which is music to the ears of splitboarders (like yours truly) who mount the poles to their packs when it’s time to ride.

(That’s right, these poles are so versatile, they can bring you right back to what you should really be doing on the mountain: snowboarding!)

Availability and pricing

Yardsale’s P2 Poles are available now for $189. The brand’s first-generation P1 poles (and P1 Mini Poles for kids) cost $149.
