In the late ’70s and early ’80s, the Rubik’s Cube took the world by storm. Billed as a puzzle toy, it was equal parts mechanical wonder and near-magical oddity. As a kid, WESN’s founder, Billy Chester, was obsessed with the Rubik’s Cube.

According to WESN’s Head of Marketing & Creative, Ethan Thompson, that obsession stayed with him. “The number of times he’s said making a mechanical puzzle is his ‘dream collab’ is measurable.” In fact, it may have directly led to the brand’s latest EDC knife collaboration.

Crafted in conjunction with YouTuber and magician Chris Ramsay, the WESN x 1st Magic Puzzle Box and Microblade keychain knife set is a master-crafted EDC wonder that requires some cleverness to use.

Do you believe in magic?

The collaboration actually comes in two parts. Obviously, the knife is the prize to be had, but customers will have to earn it, as it comes inside a puzzle box that took “more than 24 months of research, six design overhauls, and countless prototypes” to perfect.

“We have never, ever, designed or manufactured something like this before,” Thompson says. “Every tiny tolerance and moving piece has an important function. A tiny difference can throw off the whole puzzle. It took quite a few rounds of sampling, but we finally got there.”

The box is made from a combination of solid brass and aluminum. While it looks like a fairly standard (albeit beautiful) storage container, a closer inspection reveals that it’s deceptively simple and requires some brain power to unlock. Owners will have to figure out how to open it to access the knife hiding (in plain sight) inside.

“Every step of the puzzle you solve provides a satisfying click,” Thompson adds. “It’s a very fulfilling feeling you get in your hand when holding it.”

No tricks, only treats

The puzzle box is definitely a fun treat and an outstanding display piece, but the prize inside is the clear star of the show. A take on WESN’s best-selling Microblade keychain knife, this one sports a beautifully machined, skeletonized brass handle scale.

“Both [the knife and puzzle box] have these see-through layers that play well off each other,” Thomson says. “As the puzzle box developed, we wanted it to mirror the see-through knife design.” While both the box and knife have standalone potential, it’s clear they’re part of a carefully considered set.

Of course, the rest of the knife is, as always, also exceptional. The opposing scale, which houses the knife’s frame lock, is made from titanium. Furthermore, its drop-point flipper blade is hard-working D2 steel.

It’s also worth noting (partially from my personal experience) that the brass scale offers some satisfying fidget-friendliness, almost like a worry stone. According to Thompson, this, too, was intentional.

It’s a pretty magnificent achievement. And it has opened doors for the brand. “This collab has definitely opened our eyes to new possibilities for the brand,” says Thomson. “We’ve already been expanding out of ‘only’ being a pocket knife brand, and are working on numerous brand-new products.”
