With EDC knives, there’s something to be said for the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Certain handle and blade shapes work exceptionally well together, even if they’re not groundbreaking.

But having a more common silhouette doesn’t necessarily mean a knife is mundane, as We Knife’s Sylox is here to prove. Instead of relying on gimmicks, this knife takes a classic approach and kicks it into high gear with a swath of exceptional materials and mechanisms.

Unmatched materials

The We Knife Sylox comes in five distinct configurations. While they all have some similarities, each also boasts standalone value in its materials and color combinations.

For instance, all come with titanium handle scales. However, two are silver, one is gunmetal, another is blue and the last is black.

Furthermore, three have a trio of carbon fiber inlays — each featuring unique colors and patterns — while the other two have elegant Mother of Pearl inlays. While they all share the same trio of lattice-like inlays, these materials and colors help set them apart greatly.

That’s to say nothing of their blades, of which four are Böhler M390 super steel (with varying finishes and coatings), whereas the last (and most upscale) is Hugin Damasteel.

Attributes aplenty

Materials are one thing, but they must be balanced by other features to give them real-world value. After all, knives—even extremely high-end ones—are still tools that need to be useful. Luckily, even when accounting for its exquisite materials, the Sylox’s other features might be even better.

The knife’s 3.9-inch blade has two deployment options — a flipper and a full-length fuller (also known as a blood groove) — making opening it convenient and quick.

Those deployments pair with a buttery-smooth ceramic ball-bearing pivot and a trendy and reliable button lock. Furthermore, the knife has a titanium pocket clip that matches the finish of the handle.

Everything about the Sylox comes together to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Better still, it manages all this without seeming busy or like the design tries too hard. It’s genuinely exceptional.
