A folding knife is only as reliable as its lock, full stop. Sure, the blade and handle are the show-stealers, but they’re not useful and may even be dangerous if the tool doesn’t stay open securely.

An impressive, affordable package

As you can see, the Marten is, in a word, gorgeous. That’s largely owed to its stonewashed blade and machined handle. The brand’s foresight to apply the handle finish to the button lock really ties it all together and is one of the best details of all.

Of course, looks aren’t everything. Thankfully, the Marten’s materials are respectable, too. They hinge on 154CM steel for the blade (which is often compared to D2) and aluminum for the handle (which is as lightweight as it is durable).

The magic button

What sets the Vosteed Marten apart from the competition can’t be seen immediately. Tucked between the handle scales, you’ll find a top liner lock, the highlight feature of this do-everything blade.

Similar in form and function to Spyderco’s Compression lock, the Marten’s top liner lock is one of the strongest locking mechanisms ever created.

Essentially, it works the same as a normal liner lock but is found on the handle’s spine rather than its belly. This makes it both sturdier and safer.

But Vosteed expands on the original design, making it easier and more ergonomic, courtesy of a handle button. Depress the button on the side of the knife, and the lock disengages instead of having to open it manually (as with Spyderco’s).
