Usually, when a new knife is launched, it’s the knife I get excited about (obviously). I’m a huge fan of bladed tools (again, obviously) and the prospect of integrating them into my EDC loadout or camping and hiking kit revs my engine.

So when I tell you that the most exciting thing about Vosteed’s H-Back fixed blade isn’t the knife at all, I hope the gravity of that statement starts to set in.

It’s not that the knife is bad — it’s actually great. It’s just that the tech that launched alongside it is even more novel, unique and interesting.

Soaring to new heights

The exciting tech launched alongside the Vosteed H-Back knife is the S.O.A.R. Clip — short for Secured Omni Adjustable Rotation. It comes attached to the knife’s Kydex sheath.

So what makes a sheath clip — a usually innocuous, forgettable piece of your fixed blade’s kit — so interesting? It’s the mounting system. The S.O.A.R. Clip allows the sheath to rotate a full 360 degrees.

For reference, most sheath clips either don’t rotate or rotate a maximum of 180 degrees. Typically, 90-degree rotations are the best you can expect, meaning they’ll carry up-and-down or side-to-side.

You can attach it to any piece of your kit — belt, boot, pack or whatever else — and orient your knife at whatever angle best suits your needs.

The S.O.A.R., by contrast, can be oriented in any direction, at any angle. That makes it remarkably versatile when it comes to mounting your knife. You can attach it to any piece of your kit — belt, boot, pack or whatever else — and orient your knife at whatever angle best suits your needs.

That might not sound that interesting, but it makes a huge difference for anyone who has felt stymied by the carry options of typical sheath clips.

If the brand can maintain this full 360 degrees of rotation while keeping the sheath secure when you find a position you like (meaning it doesn’t just spin or shift out of place every time you use it), this could be a huge deal for the fixed blade category.

A blade that deserves the spotlight

Even with the reveal of that unique, patent-pending sheath clip tech, the Vosteed H-Back knife that comes with it is nothing to be scoffed at, either. By every measure, it’s a solid, sturdy, small fixed-blade knife perfect for hiking, camping and bushcraft usage.

It’s marked by a 2.92-inch 14C28N steel clip-point blade with a versatile cutting belly and excellent piercing point. It also boasts a full-tang handle with textured G10 handle scales that promise excellent performance in any condition.

The knife also has multiple sets of jimping along its blade and handle for extra grip and grit where you need it. And it has a lanyard hole on the tail. The knife measures 6.85 inches and weighs just 2.91 ounces, making it as lightweight as it is versatile.
