A First Look at Yeti’s New Gear Storage Box

Yeti’s newest product is an overbuilt and nearly indestructible storage container.

Yeti just revealed its first new large item of the year: a cargo box called the LoadOut GoBox 30. It’s gear storage hyperbole; like the bombproof ice vault coolers that gave the brand its original cult following, the GoBox is nigh indestructible, waterproof and dustproof. It is, to use an all-too-common turn of phrase, a Rubbermaid bin on steroids.

Durability isn’t all that the GoBox has going for it though. Its twin latches are easy to open (but take some force to close), and it has ergonomic grips on all sides that make it comfortable to lift and carry when it’s fully loaded. Those familiar with Yeti coolers might remark that the box looks undersized, but the lack of insulation reveals plenty of interior space, which you can compartmentalize with a variety of accessories that include a divider, tote for small items and a lid insert with three zippered pockets.

Yeti’s overbuilt box is one of those things that appears simple but implies as many applications as the imagination can come up with. Gear storage is a necessary reality of nearly every outdoor activity — overlanding, car camping, whitewater rafting, hunting, fishing; the list goes on. It also implicitly implies what we can expect from Yeti as it begins to take on the likes of Pelican in the gear protection category; expect GoBoxes in larger and smaller sizes and GoBoxes with wheels and telescoping handles, plus a more extensive range of accessories for storing specific items like camera bodies and lenses.

As with all Yeti products, burliness comes with a price tag: it’s $250 for the LoadOut GoBox 30, which will go on sale this May.
