Throughout recorded history, one of the most revered shapes on record is the equilateral triangle.

Referenced by everyone from Euclid to Pierre de Fermat to freakin’ Napoleon, it continues to serve a meaningful role in everything from the design of the Gateway Arch to the Filipino flag to the yield sign.

As ubiquitous as it is, I’ve never really seen an equilateral triangle brought to life in a multi-tool — until now.

Even so, beholding the Ti-Scout 8-in-1 Tool in glorious and satisfying action, my biggest question is: what took so long?

Funky functions

Made of your choice of titanium alloy, stainless steel or brass, the Ti-Scout is actually three triangles (two base plates sandwiching a deployable middle section) and isn’t much bigger than a (very thick) guitar pick.

One of the most interesting things about it, beyond the shape, is its mix of functions, which may be specific to this item — and are almost certainly unique to one this small.

The most obvious are the military-grade precision compass and thermometer.

While you can easily access the same tools on your smartphone, it’s pretty convenient (not to mention battery saving and digitally disconnecting) to have them in your hand.

The third little circle on the base plate is a spirit level, which, as the Kickstarter page says, “calibrates not only the angle, but also the posture of your communication with the earth.” Alrighty then.

Another function you can access without deploying the middle section isn’t immediately visible.

Stashed in a built-in slot near the level, the magnesium rod can be used like a flint to start a fire (assuming you know what you are doing).

Between the compass and thermometer, you’ll also see a couple of slots: these house dual tritium luminous tubes, making it easier to find your magic triangle in the dark.

Familiar features

Once deployed, via a flick of the protruding point — which doubles as a lanyard hole and perhaps a glass breaker — the middle section of the Ti-Scout provides access to features that are perhaps a bit more common to multi-tools but unique in their own way.

These include the classic pry tool and a pretty robust-looking and user-friendly bottle opener.

Even cooler (or hotter) than those is something that may stir childhood memories: a high-transmittance magnifying glass that can use the sun’s rays to set dry tinder aflame in 10 seconds or less.

As you might expect, the magnifying glass can also be used to more closely examine objects you encounter out on the trails, or simply in the course of daily life.

One final function is a bit less “essential” but notable nonetheless: opening and closing the tool triggers a mechanical click that the Kickstarter page aptly calls a “stress relief easter egg.”

Would you expect anything less from such a geometrically significant, delightfully perfect shape?

Availability and pricing

The Ti-Scout 8-in-1 Tool is currently available on Kickstarter in stainless steel for $65, brass for $75 and titanium alloy for $89. Estimated delivery is November 2025.
