With its Wharncliffe blade, rosewood handle and slip joint, The Pike is easily The James Brand’s most grandfatherly knife — in a good way. As with most products from the Portland, Oregon-based outfit, it retains a clean, contemporary vibe.

One need not be a mixologist to appreciate and employ this knife to tackle daily duties. Boasting a blade made of DS93X Rose Damasteel (prized for its rippling sheen, toughness and edge retention), it no doubt has the chops.

If you find the design appealing but crave a bit more pizzazz, you’re in luck. Thanks to a team-up with a hip New York City cocktail institution, a new interpretation maxes out on modern looks and functional tweaks. Meet The James Brand x Death & Co limited-edition Pike.

Not just for crafting cocktails

For any bartender worth their proverbial salt, a knife is a pretty essential tool. How else do you slice a lime for a caipirinha or garnish an Old-Fashioned with a curly-cue sliver of orange peel, after all?

With that in mind, the new Pike possesses a notable distinction from its predecessors. The blade shape evolves from a Wharncliffe to a modified sheepsfoot, which makes sense.

While the former is more versatile for everyday tasks, the latter offers a high level of control, clean cutting capability and the lack of a piercing point (making it safer for speedy use) — all reasons it is commonly employed in kitchen and chef’s knives.

Like the Pikes that have come before, the new collab knife carries forward a handy detail: A nail nick toward the front of the blade (and corresponding handle indentation) makes it easier to quickly deploy when needed.

That said, one need not be a mixologist to appreciate and employ this knife to tackle daily duties like opening letters and cutting packing tape. Boasting a blade made of DS93X Rose Damasteel (prized for its rippling sheen, toughness and edge retention), it no doubt has the chops.

Rounding out the features are black PVD-coated stainless steel inlays, a laser-etched handle and a lanyard to make it a little easier hold onto. Because whether you procure this puppy for yourself, receive it as a gift or procure it for a loved one, you’ll want to make sure it sticks around for generations to come.
