In the everyday carry world, pocket knives typically get all the glory. But they might not be the most valuable part of your EDC loadout, functionally speaking. A seemingly modest writing utensil might offer the most overall utility.

EDC Pens are great for quickly scribbling down useful information (there’s a very real connection between handwriting and memory). They won’t elicit gasps or suspicious glances when you pull one from your pocket (unlike knives). They can be used as self-defense tools in a pinch (just like knives). And they often share the same level of craftsmanship as bladed tools.

Case in point: the drop-dead-gorgeous EDC-focused writing utensil The James Brand recently released, The Bolen.

Master craftsmanship

The Bolen comes in two versions: stainless steel and titanium. Apart from their material difference, they’re otherwise identical. That includes their exceptional craftsmanship.

There are two big highlights. First, the dappled grip is beautifully rendered, but it’s also practical, allowing you to grip the pen securely and quickly whenever needed.

Second, the pen’s pocket clip is artful in itself. It’s sized perfectly to go along with the rest of the pen and offers security whether attaching it to your pocket, a notebook or otherwise.

However, balance is the most critical part of this tool’s design. From end to end, it’s a masterclass in writing utensil craftsmanship that could stand alongside greats like the original Fisher Space Pen.

Made for EDC

Most pens are capable of EDC inclusion, sure. But not all of them are made with carry in mind. Some are best kept in a drawer or on a desk.

Thankfully, The Bolen can handle both with grace and aplomb. As mentioned, it’s stunning. But, its 5.3-inch length and 0.3-inch diameter were scribed specifically with pocket carry in mind.

The pen is ergonomic when held in the hand but also slim enough to slip practically unnoticed into even the most overpacked of pockets. That’s helped by the security of its twist operation and sturdy pocket clip.

Most critically, it manages all that while being compatible with Pilot G2 refills, arguably the most ubiquitous and popular cartridges ever. I hesitate to call any pen perfect, but this one makes a strong case.
