What’s in a name? When it comes to one particular recent knife release, a helluva lot.

In Norse mythology, Fenrir is a son of Loki. He also happens to be a monstrous wolf who helps set the world on fire during Ragnarök, setting in motion the collapse of society. And oh yeah, dude also kills Odin

In other words, a knife by the same name has much to live up to. Thanks to such features as its badass blade, super-smooth deployment and a sweet price point, Tenable’s Fenrir is up to the task.

Myth buster

While the aforementioned wolf is (presumably) the stuff of fantasy, the knife is no fairy tale.

Designed by Mississippi-based Greg Schob, the Fenrir leads with an immediately noticeable feature, that borderline lycanthropic blade.

While the 3.45-inch harpoon-style blade might not stand a chance against the Optimus Prime of Norse gods, it should have no problem tackling an Amazon box or a ripe Granny Smith apple.

The 3.45-inch harpoon-style shape, crafted from reliable Sandvik 14C28N steel, is actually quite practical, with the large belly ideal for controlled slicing and piercing.

So while it might not stand a chance against the Optimus Prime of Norse gods, the Fenrir should have no problem tackling an Amazon box or a ripe Granny Smith apple.

In addition to a striking look, the Frag Pattern making up most of the handle on some variants — including the T1034S2 shown here — should enhance grip.

Equally notable, however, is what keeps that blade safe and secure within the handle — the super fidgety, functional and oh-so-trendy button lock

Press the button near the pivot while flicking your wrist to swiftly deploy the blade. Press it again and let gravity smoothly return it to the handle. (The blade can also be deployed via thumb studs, for the record.)

The Fenrir is available with a variety of handle and blade treatments. The one shown on this page is my favorite: a combination of black aluminum with a frag pattern and plain aluminum, complemented by the Blackwash blade finish.

Rounding out this knife’s features is a deep-carry pocket clip. Just as the thumb studs are ambidextrous, the clip is reversible, making it equally friendly to right and left handers.

There are a total of 11 Fenrir treatments, but they sell out fast, so if you are interested, pounce like a wolf.

One final point worth noting is that due to its materials and size — overall length, 7.93 inches — the Fenrir is not particularly light. It tips the scales at 4.23 ounces.

But hey, that’s still a helluva lot lighter than Thor’s hammer, right?

Availability and pricing

The Tenable Fenrir is available now with several different handle treatments starting at $57. The black-and-white variant shown here costs $69. (Nice!)
