About a month ago, I predicted that button locks would be one of the biggest trends in the EDC knife industry this year. While I’m no Nostradamus, I may have been onto something.

With the release of the Spyderco Sage 6, one of the biggest, most respected brands in the everyday carry space has further solidified my prediction. Furthermore, it means one of the best locking mechanisms ever invented has gotten even better.

Push it real good

Spyderco’s Compression Lock is one of the best locks ever made — full stop. But the Sage 6 capitalizes on it in a way that makes it even more convenient and easy to use.

Functionally, the lock is still the same — combining the concepts of a liner lock and back lock to create one more formidable than either. However, adding a button release makes operating it as simple as, well, pushing a button.

While it was always possible to operate the Compression Lock one-handed, this makes it far more convenient. Users no longer have to shift their grip to claw at the mechanism awkwardly. Instead, give the button a little squeeze, and — bam! — the blade swings free.

Best of all, you don’t lose any of the strength or security the lock offers. It’s just as powerful as ever.

Carbon fiber two ways

The knife comes in two configurations; both get a drop-point blade with the brand’s signature oversized thumb hole.

Where they differ is in their steel and handle materials. The more budget-friendly of the two (if you can call it that) comes with a G10 and carbon fiber laminate alongside an S30V blade. The pricier edition has full carbon fiber handles and an S90V blade.

Either way, the knives weigh 3.10 ounces and measure 7.17 inches (with a 3.0-inch blade). They even look largely identical, although the full carbon fiber has a slightly more apparent weave pattern.

You’ll have to decide if the purity of the handle material and the blade steel upgrade is worth it for a nearly $100 increase in price.

Preorder now

The G10 and carbon fiber laminate and S30V version of the Spyderco Sage 6 Button Lock knife is available for preorder on Blade HQ for $210 ($70 off the MSRP).

Unfortunately, the full carbon fiber S90V version isn’t yet available. However, you can add it to your wishlist on Blade HQ (accounts are free if you don’t yet have one) and get notified when it drops. It’s priced at $300 ($100 off the MSRP).
