It’s hard to believe, but Smith, one of the most enduring optics brands, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The brand is reviving a pair of its best retro shades to mark the occasion, albeit with some very modern updates.

Here’s the thing: I don’t even like wraparound sunglasses. Yet, somehow, I’ve fallen in love with these Smith Ultralites. I think you might, too. Here’s what makes them so great.

Totally retro (but also not)

This retro redux is based on the original Smith Ultralites, released in 1987 — a whopping 38 years ago. Form-wise, they remain true to their archival predecessors, sporting big, bold wraparound lenses attached to a thin frame.

The materials, however, are a different story entirely. Unlike the originals, these sport a modern, durable bio-based frame, ChromaPop lens technology for unmatched clarity and 100-percent UV protection. They also have a smudge- and moisture-resistant coating to keep the lenses blemish-free in all conditions.

From the streets to the slopes

As you might guess from their shape, these glasses are based on ski goggles. They even have ventilation holes to prevent them from fogging up, should you choose to hit the slopes on a blue-bird day.

The ultralight frames and performance lenses also make them perfect for all manner of other outdoor activities, such as running, cycling, skateboarding, hiking and more.

Their AutoLock hinges further enhance this, making them easy to put on and take off with one hand. Plus, the adjustable Megol nose pads offer unmatched comfort.

They’re also not so outrageous that you couldn’t wear them as your go-to EDC sunnies. Put bluntly, the Smith Ultralites are remarkably versatile.

If these retro shades are calling your name, I have great news. The Smith Ultralites are already on sale at the brand’s site for $175. Better still, they’re available in five distinct colorways, including three bold, colorful options and two more toned-down ones.
