From the Hit Kit to the Toolkey (and Toolkey II), Kansas City-area EDC maker Screwpop has established a rep for crafting small, smart tools with rare features.

The latest innovation from the brand? A keychain-sized utility knife that’s uniquely ambidextrous. Fitting, it’s called the Twin Trak

Double-barreled blades

The name is fitting because, in order to achieve its ambidextrousness, the knife employs a design that’s the first of its kind.

The distinguishing factor is “dual-chamber” blade channels, with one blade deployable using the right thumb and the other deployable with the left thumb.

A steel lever holds each blade in the safety position or at four different cutting depths (via the notches at the top of the blade).

While it took me a bit of practice to deploy and retract (thanks to gravity and a neodymium magnet blade catch) with one hand, I found it pretty easy to do after a few minutes.

The double-barreled nature of the knife does have a couple of bonus benefits as well. The biggest is that you always have a backup blade stored for use should the main one be lost or damaged.

One bonus feature of the dual-chamber design is that you always have a backup blade at the ready.

Second, if you ever needed to multiply your cutting power, you could theoretically deploy both blades at once for twice the slice.

Like all things Screwpop, the Twin Trak is incredibly compact, lean and tough. Made of aerospace-grade aluminum and finished with protective Type II black anodization, the unit weighs just 0.7 ounces with blades.

The Twin Trak’s round cutout easily accepts a lanyard or keyring, making it convenient to tote in a variety of ways.

Dimension-wise, it measures just 0.22 x 0.88 x 3.12 inches, making it easy to attach to a keyring, carabiner clip or lanyard.

Of course, if you ever choose to fly with it on your person/in your carry-on luggage, you can simply remove the blades and pick some up at a drugstore on the other end.
