Salomon may be a streetwear darling now but it still makes footwear for the toughest trails.

Case in point: its new Snowclog Advanced, which can shape-shift between a streamlined hiking shoe to a rugged winter boot within seconds.

Salomon calls the Snowclog Advanced “an exploration into functional, winterized modularity.” In other words, it can evolve to meet one’s needs, no matter how gnarly the conditions get out there.

Fundamentally, the new shoe is a lightweight hiker based off a popular archival Salomon model called the Snowclog, which reappeared earlier this year in mule form.

This version is truer to the original but receives a bevy of technical performance upgrades, as well as the option to convert it into a full-on hiking boot for the worst conditions.

The Contragrip All Terrain outsole is Salomon’s most versatile design. Thick lugs provide plenty of grip but the rubber compound is robust enough to stand up against rocks and concrete.

The first of those upgrades is Salomon’s versatile Contragrip All Terrain outsole, comprised of grippy lugs and a durable rubber compound that won’t break down on rocks or concrete (a notorious issue with the brand’s most famous model, the XT-6).

Moving up the shoe, a knitted upper not only conforms to one’s foot but acts as a barrier against moisture thanks to a special DWR treatment. It also has a synthetic mudguard that acts as a buffer for the lateral and medial sides of the foot.

The headlining feature, however, is its fully weatherproof gaiter that can be attached or removed as conditions demand. It connects to the lugs with bungee cords, while a zipper keeps the on and off efficient.
