Rimowa is most famous for making some of the world’s toughest, best-looking hard-sided aluminum luggage. Even when the brand’s bags get beat up, they still look great and function exceptionally well.

Now, Rimowa is getting into soft-sided bags in earnest. However, they’re probably not what you’re thinking. Instead of trying to do more of the same, the brand has taken a completely different approach.

Rimowa’s Foldable Bags are made specifically to supplement the brand’s hard-sided luggage. However, they’re also exceptional everyday carry packs.

Fully-featured, fully-collapsible

The Foldable Bag Collection launched with just two bags. That said, they’re both pretty exceptional offerings.

The larger of the two is the Foldable Gym Bag, which is configured like a standard duffle bag, along with suitcase carry straps and an adjustable shoulder strap.

It boasts a 9.3-gallon (approximately 35.2 liters) capacity — on the larger side of standard ranges — largely made up of its spacious main compartment. However, it also has a smaller secondary pouch on each side.

The fact that both of these backs pack down into pocket-sized integrated travel pouches helps set them apart.

The other bag is a Foldable Backpack, which is 6.6 gallons (just under 25 liters) — about average for an EDC pack. It has a large main compartment and a smaller front pocket, both zippered. It also has adjustable shoulder straps and a top handle.

Both bags also feature durable, lightweight palladium hardware — an unnecessary but appreciated and perhaps unsurprising upscale addition.

While those features might sound pretty standard for fully-featured bags, the fact that both of these backs pack down into pocket-sized integrated travel pouches helps set them apart.

Materials make the difference

Packable bags aren’t exactly a new product category. Over the years, several brands have built their entire reputations on their collapsible offerings, like Matador. So what sets Rimowa’s apart?

For starters, their design is exceptional, as is expected from a brand like Rimowa. Though minimalist in their appearance, the brand clearly took the bags’ lines and angles to heart during their creation.

But those exteriors only look good if they stay free of creases and wrinkles. The best feature is that both bags are built with “crease-resistant” polyester fabric, helping to keep them clean and smooth even after long periods of being packed away. As a bonus, polyester is also naturally water-resistant.

Unfortunately, Rimowa hasn’t shared specifically what that fabric entails. That said, I’m not sure we necessarily need to know the recipe for the secret sauce to appreciate it. Plus, they come with a two-year warranty if they don’t perform to your expectations.

Available now

Rimowa’s Foldable Bags are now available on the brand’s site. The Foldable Gym Bag is priced at $450, and the Foldable Backpack is $450.

While the prices are obviously prohibitive, the bags mark a brave new frontier for one of the most revered luggage brands in the world. Hopefully, there’s more to come in the future.
