How Did This Little-Known Knife Brand Win Two Huge Awards Out of the Blue?

The Poikiloblade Orca seemingly came from nowhere to wow the judges at Blade Show West. We tracked down one of the men behind it.

On June 28th, a pretty prosaic post appeared on Instagram: “The orca, or killer whale, is a toothed whale that is the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family.”

What accompanied this text was a bit more noteworthy: a photo of a breathtaking new knife called, yes, the Orca.

To date, the post has 49 likes — and the poster, Poikiloblade, has 3,662 followers. But thanks to a pretty magical weekend for the nascent knife maker, those numbers may soon change.

“The term ‘Poikilo’ is derived from the scientific term ‘Poikilotherm,’ which describes organisms, such as lizards, that possess a variable body temperature fluctuating in harmony with their environment … In a similar vein, we aspire for our products to adapt to the dynamic shifts within the knife community, bringing both satisfaction and joy to their owners.”

— Poikiloblade co-founder Andy Wang

Because at Blade Show West, the Orca surfaced in a most spectacular fashion, winning not only the “Best Factory Folder” category but also claiming “Best in Show.”

With details about the brand and the knife almost non-existent online, we resolved to dig deeper. We reached one of the founders, Andy Wang, via Instagram, to learn more. Here, in his words, is the story behind Poikiloblade (or PKB) and the award-winning Orca.

When and where was Poikiloblade founded, and what inspired you and your partners to found it?

Our brand was founded approximately three years ago. I’m a passionate knife collector and enthusiast since 2007, while my partner, Vince Wang [no relation], embarked on his journey of collecting balisongs in 2016. It was our shared passion for balisongs that brought us together, igniting lively discussions on how to enhance these remarkable tools.

As our conversations evolved, we expanded our focus to include folding knives, which inspired us to brainstorm and create our own unique products. Fast forward three years later, and we had the opportunity of showcasing a dozen of our designs at the 2024 Blade Show West.

Our products are manufactured in China. I’m based out of Hayward, California.

What is the story behind the name and logo?

The term “Poikilo” is derived from the scientific term “Poikilotherm,” which describes organisms, such as lizards, that possess a variable body temperature fluctuating in harmony with their environment. This term is often associated with reptiles and cold-blooded species. Our research indicates that the correct pronunciation is “pȯi-ˈkē-lə”.

Our logo features a chameleon, a captivating member of the lizard family renowned for its vibrant colors and remarkable ability to change for camouflage. In a similar vein, we aspire for our products to adapt to the dynamic shifts within the knife community, bringing both satisfaction and joy to their owners.

How did the Orca come to be? Were you surprised how well it was received at Blade Show West?

True to its name, the design philosophy of this folder draws inspiration from the majestic orca whale, embodying both grace and power. This exquisite piece is a proud member of our distinguished “Bio” series, showcasing a harmonious blend of artistry curvature and cutting-edge craftsmanship across our diverse product lines.

To say the least, we were both pleasantly surprised! As we stepped into the award submission room, given that it was our very first show, we hoped for nothing more than an honorable mention. Now, we are still brimming with excitement over this prestigious recognition from our community. This accolade serves as a profound inspiration, reinforcing our commitment to our core philosophy: delivering satisfaction and joy to every owner of our products!

We’d love to say we guessed the knife steel just by looking at it, but the characters on the blade are a helpful hint.

It looks like the blade is Böhler M398 steel. Is that correct? What is the handle made of? How long is the blade? What is the overall length? What is the locking mechanism?

You are absolutely correct! The blade steel for the Orca is crafted from M398, expertly heat-treated to approximately 62 HRC. Most, if not all, of our products will also feature this exceptional steel.

The handle of the Orca is elegantly constructed from titanium in a sophisticated two-piece design. To enhance its aesthetic appeal, we opted to darken one slab with a layer of titanium coating, creating a striking contrast that captivates the eye. We are immensely pleased with its overall appearance, and the coating offers impressive resistance to scratches, making it perfectly suited for daily use.

The blade length is 3.6 inches, the overall length is 8.6 inches and it has a good old liner lock.

Will this knife be available for purchase in the US? When and how?

Absolutely! We are working with a retailer/distributor to bring them to the market. I would say expect around holiday time frame (early to mid-November-ish), if not sooner.
