This Brilliant Hack Changed the Way I Travel with Pocket Knives

This effective trick adds one more feature to even the simplest of pocket knives.

You know the problem. You’re on the road and need to freshen up. So you pop into a restroom to change your shirt, only to discover that your stall’s door doesn’t have a hook.

Now you’re doing this weird balancing act with jackets and shirts, praying nothing falls on the ground — or worse, in the toilet. It’s a dangerous game to play but, as I recently learned, one you can win, if not skip altogether.

Turn Any Pocket Knife Into a Coat Hook

Just follow the lead in this 22-second YouTube video from one Eric Dean. In it, he shows off an ingenious hack, whereby you can simply jam the blade into the top of the hydraulic door closer or the top hinge of the bathroom stall door — or the gap between the door and the wall. Doing so turns the handle of your knife into a makeshift hanger.

Then you can skip the clothes juggling and smoothly change shirts without all the drama. Bonus points if you hum the MacGyver theme song while doing so.

Of course, you need a pocket knife to make this work — which can be tricky if you fly. Fortunately, plenty of brands make TSA-approved multitools that may have tools that can stand-in for a long blade.

Closer to home, or at least for travelers by car or train, there is no shortage of quality options from knife brands ranging from Victorinox to Spyderco (pictured above).

Safe travels, and good luck in that bathroom stall … although I hope you no longer need it.
