Good Luck Finding a Gravel Bike as Light, Aero and Fast as This Italian Beauty

Having dominated road racing for years, the Pinarello Dogma gets an ultra-light, ultra-aero off-road overhaul.

Pedigree. That word aptly describes what Treviso, Italy-based bike maker Pinarello has established over the past 72 years.

The proof is truly in the pudding here, with the brand’s 16 Tour de France victories — six more than any other brand — stating the case for the quality of the brand’s bikes (which also happen to be quite beautiful) loud and clear.

Like so many great Dogmas before it, this one carries that uniquely funky and fantastic Pinarello silhouette.

Perhaps even more significantly, since 2012, 7 TdFs have been won by riders pedaling some version of the brand’s flagship race bike, the Dogma.

A few years back, Pinarello extended this pedigree to the ever-growing sport of gravel with the Grevil F, which I got a chance to ride at SBT GRVL and absolutely loved.

Pinarello’s research has shown that sometimes aerodynamics can, ahem, outweigh weight savings, and you sure can’t argue with the results.

Now, however, the brand is tapping into the pure aerodynamic lightness and velocity of the Dogma silhouette with a big move: the introduction of the Dogma GR

While the next generation of Grevil F bikes will be aimed at longer distances, the Dogma GR is purpose-built with the speed and stability to dominate races under five hours.

As you might imagine, the brand has pulled out all the stops to bring its newest gravel bike up to the performance level of its flagship road bike — with the staggering looks (and perhaps even more staggering price tag) to match.

Toward that end, two overarching attributes of the bike stand out: its super light frame and its ultra aero shape. Let’s take a closer look at those two attributes.

Winning the frame game

Pinarello calls the Dogma GR the lightest aero gravel bike on the market and indeed, it rivals Specialized’s S-Works Crux for lightest gravel bike, period.

That’s thanks in no small part to a frame weighing just 960 grams (roughly 2.1 pounds). It is of course derived from the Dogma F’s M40X, a highly advanced layup blending lightness, responsiveness and durability for a tensile modulus of 377.

The bike’s ONDA fork is specifically design to soak up bumps and help maintain traction in situations like this one.
Pinarello

Complementary to this structure is an ONDA fork with a special shape and carbon layup intended to optimize vertical compliance and absorb shock, helping you maintain traction even when the terrain gets tough and technical.

Along similar lines, an adaptive seatpost features a longitudinal flex of 8mm, providing shock absorption without giving up power transfer.

Streamlined as it is, the frame still features the Aero Load System — a clever downtube storage port that integrates a toolbag — and top tube bag mountings (included in the stated frame weight).

In step with the times, the Dogma GR integrates convenient downtube storage.

Considering the increasing popularity of downtube storage on gravel and mountain bikes, the brand would be remiss not to include the former feature.

The bottom line here is that a complete bike (fitted with SRAM RED groupset, Princeton Grit 4540 EVO wheels and Vittoria 40mm tires) weighs in at 7.35 kg, or roughly 16.2 pounds.

Shaped for speed

As I learned when Pinarello invited me to testride the then-new Dogma F in the Dolomites last summer, the brand actually prioritizes aerodynamics even more than weight.

Their own research has shown that sometimes aerodynamics can, ahem, outweigh weight savings, and you sure can’t argue with the results.

You better believe the handlebars and head tube are optimized for aero.

Toward that end this gorgeous new bike is festooned with little details that, while invisible to the untrained eye, could make a huge difference out on the trails.

These include a nose-shaped head tube, a hidden front thru axle thread and a flared Talon Ultrafast GR handlebar (with rivets to accommodate TT gravel bars).

No matter how fast you are looking to go, you can always make time for fun.

The Dogma GR also boasts race geometry inspired by the Crossista (Pinarello’s cyclocross bike) to offer a balance of high-speed performance, responsive and trail-worthy versatility.

Toward similar ends, the bike is optimized for 42mm tire clearance. However, the front clearance can be extended to accommodate up to 45mm tires. You know, for the real maniacs out there.

Availability and pricing

The Pinarello Dogma GR starts at €6,700, roughly $7,824, for the frame only. Complete builds for the US-available model (SRAM with Power Meter) start at $14,500.
