Some of the best everyday carry products are the ones that marry form and function in unexpected ways. Keychain multi-tools, for instance, are often quite tiny but offer loads of utility.

One of the really tough categories to nail down is minimalist bags. Many of the most stripped-down ones are little more than cloth sacks (I’m talking about you, totes), whereas those with more functionality often look very busy, losing much of their stylishness.

Every so often, one comes along that walks that tightrope masterfully, offering excellent utility in a sleek, stylish package. The Orbitkey x Ucon Acrobatics Urban Sling is one such bag.

Minimalist masquerade

The exterior of the bag is extremely minimalist, marred only by a small co-branded logo on the front and its brighter zipper pulls. It features a simple black motif that extends from the body all around the strap.

But its also hiding a handy safety feature in plain sight. See, the bag’s body is made from ECO-RFLX-900 custom fabric. In normal light, it appears like a fairly normal, albeit durable, black fabric.

But shine a light directly on it — like car headlights — and it reveals its true nature: its reflective. That subtle feature adds to its appeal as a commuter pack, as it adds some safety in low-light conditions, helping make the wearer more visible.

Along with being durable and reflective, the fabric is also water-resistant, helping keep its contents dry in inclement weather — another boon to city-going commuters. It also gets a quick-release clip on the shoulder strap, as well as an external keyring that doubles as a bottle opener in a pinch.

Utilitarian dynamo

As minimalist as its exterior is, this bag is hiding some serious internal organization. The main pouch (accessible via a YKK zipper), for instance, has a large primary compartment, a couple of pouches (sized for iPhones and wallets and the like), and a secondary internal zippered pouch for smaller and more sensitive items.

The scheme is simple but comprehensive, allowing you to keep all your EDC gear (and anything else you might be carrying around) orderly and easily-accessed. But that’s just the start.

On the back of the bag — accessible via a more discreet, hidden zipper — there’s a sneaky second pocket for your more sensitive valuables. This would be a good place to stash things like tickets, a passport and so on.

That discreet pocket also has a key tether spot that is compatible with Orbitkey’s handy magnetic quick-release. This way, you can tether your keys and they’ll stay secure in transit, but the moment you need them, you can access them without having to fiddle with an annoying buckle or awkwardly maneuvering your bag near the applicable keyhole.
