Wes Anderson Secretly Reinvented a Century-Old EDC Icon — and It Could Be Yours

Even the company that hired him, the world’s most famous writing utensil brand, didn’t know he was working on the project.

Last year, Montblanc’s iconic Meisterstück pen turned 100. To celebrate the milestone, the brand hired eccentric, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Wes Anderson to create a short film about the legendary writing utensil.

However, that partnership took an unexpected turn, surprising even Montblanc. This resulted in the Montblanc Wes Anderson’s The Schreiberling Limited Edition 1969 EDC pen set. Now, the quirky pen can be yours.

The German dispatch

As mentioned, Berlin-based brand Montblanc hired Anderson to do a simple job: to make a short, yet impactful flick about the 100th anniversary of the brand’s original writing utensil. Anderson agreed, and he fulfilled his promise.

But he also decided to take things a step further. Instead of simply making the short film and being done with it, he took up a secret project inspired directly by Montblanc’s history of crafting exceptional writing utensils.

Some time later, he presented his project to Montblanc and, presumably, they loved it. I say this because they put it into production (almost) immediately.

While the original plan was to release the project to the public in May, delays have since pushed it back. Thankfully, it appears the time has finally come. All 1,969 examples will launch very soon.

Enter the scribbler

Anderson called his creation The Schreiberling, German for “the scribbler.” It’s a pocketable fountain pen inspired by ‘baby’ pens of the 1910s and ’20s.

The stout writing utensil features a click-on cap and is done up in yellow, red, silver and dual shades of green. The tail features a minimalist version of the brand’s iconic logo and the tip has an engraved scribble, a reference to the pen’s name.

However, that’s not all that’s included. The set comes in a stunning, minimalist green tin with the project’s name embossed on the surface. It also includes a notepad, architectural ruler and ink cartridge refills, all done up in the same color scheme.

Whether you’re a fan of Anderson’s many quirky films or you just appreciate a good everyday carry writing utensil (and accessories), this is a tough set to pass up.
