Few groups deeply understand the ultra-light travel space like bag and accessory maker Matador and the travel equipment evaluators at Carryology. So when the two partner together to collaborate, you can expect the result to move the industry forward.

Both brands revealed their latest collaborative effort this week, the so-called EDX Lite Backpack. The “Lite” in the name nods to the fact that this version is 13.4% lighter and 15% more packable than the original EDX Backpack collaboration launched last June.

We appreciate the duo’s dedication to minimal branding. They added discreet screen-printed branding in black gloss that’s very hard to spot until it catches the light.

Like its predecessor, the EDX Lite is intended to be a functional-yet-still-extremely-packable 22-liter backpack with a clear use case. Stash it away in your main bag while journeying to your destination. Then pull it out and use it as a daypack once you’ve arrived.

Though simple in its premise, the details both teams scrutinized to produce the final product epitomize what makes them both leaders in the travel space.

For a complete and comprehensive overview of virtually every single design decision that went into the EDX Lite, go read Carryology’s overview. But if you’re interested in a summary, here’s what stands out the most about the bag to us.

EDX Lite Key Design Details

They commissioned a custom fabric made by Robic specifically for the project amplified by UHMWPE (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene), supposedly the strongest fiber on Earth. It’s also waterproof.

Since the design called for organizational pockets, seam welding for water resistance wasn’t feasible. So, the group developed a new water-resistant seam binding dubbed HydraGuard that prevents water from seeping through the seams like in traditional bag construction.

Just because the EDX Lite is highly packable doesn’t mean it’s devoid of useful pockets.

The rear tech sleeve has been improved with a better magnets system, a Woojin buckle, and micro webbing.

The bag also includes two side water bottle pockets featuring magnetic closures that fold away when not in use to streamline the pack’s silhouette.

Despite being a fully functional backpack, the EDX Lite packs down to a diminutive 4.25 x 5.25 x 6.75 inches while weighing only 13.09 oz.

It ships with a mesh pocket that tightens up via a cinch cord that can also be used as a small organizer when the backpack is in use.
