I can appreciate a good packing cube system. I’ll also admit that it’s often hard to differentiate between them. Matador’s new Gear Cube Set stands out for a few reasons.
The cube’s shape is one of its main distinctions. The bucket design makes it easier to grab whatever’s packed inside and helps the cube rest upright during packing. An extra-long main zipper and integrated quick-release cinch straps work with the bag’s shape, making the cube easy to stuff and compress. Other welcomed bonuses include two top handles for carrying and a DWR finish for weather resistance.

The set’s $55 price is expensive for a packing cube solution, but the investment seems justified considering the capabilities they borrow from weather-resistant bags and stuff sacks. I just wish Matador offered the option to purchase gear bags individually instead of just a small, medium, and large kit. The three bag sets come in black and “Arctic White.”

Matador Gear Cube Set
Pros
- Bucket shape helps bag sit upright
- Extra-long zipper makes seeing content easy
- Integrated quick-release compression straps
- Durable Water Repellent Finish
Cons
- More expense than other packing cubes
- Can't buy specific sizes individually
In more mundane news, Matador also launched a traditional packing cube set at a more traditional price point. Aesthetically, the bag’s clean lines look nicer than the competition, but functionally, they still work like any other packing cube, although you can’t easily see the bag’s contents. The Slate Blue color option is unique yet complementary to black and Artic white.
