During the eight painstaking years he spent developing his first product, the Pocket Survival Tool (or PST), Tim Leatherman honed a quality that his eponymous brand’s vast array of products carry forward to this day: every piece has a purpose.

Considering the PST went from one 500-unit order from Cabela’s in 1983 to selling over a million units annually within a decade, the formula obviously works.

Now a multi-tool inspired by the PST is carrying that tradition forward, with a bit of flair.

Meet the new two-toned Rebar, boasting a trio of colorful handles that, true to the Leatherman ethos, aren’t just for show.

’Kote of armor

The three handle treatments, dubbed Burnt Sienna, Mossy Slate and Heathered Cranberry, are easily identifiable by their distinct hues.

The Cerakote treatment boosts the 440C stainless steel handles’ resistance to abrasion, wear, corrosion and chemicals.

If they look familiar, you may recall that Leatherman gave its Bond multi-tool a similar makeover this past September.

But what do they add, beyond visual pop? The colors are the result of a Cerakote finish.

The Rebar carries forward Leatherman’s biggest breakthrough: pocketable pliers.

This special treatment — which we have begun to see on an increasing number of pocket knife blades, including the new Benchmade Bailout — boosts the 440C stainless steel handles’ resistance to abrasion, wear, corrosion and chemicals.

The added protection comes at a small upcharge ($90 versus $80 for the classic Rebar), which seems like a reasonable price to pay for the durability upgrade.

Function forward

Of course, none of that would matter if the Rebar itself weren’t one helluva multi-tool.

But of course it totally is. Expanding on the original PST’s 13 tools, the Rebar offers a total of 17 in a package that’s just four inches long when fully closed.

You are not required to color match your Rebar to the task at hand, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

Among those are multiple pliers (needlenose and regular), wire cutters and strippers, knives (420HC regular and serrated 2.9-inch blades) and screwdrivers (small and large flatheads plus a Phillips heads).

The 6.7-ounce Rebar also offers a saw, an awl with a thread loop, ruler, can opener, bottle opener and a wood/metal file.

All tools are secured via a tensioned locking mechanism, ensuring safe and reliable performance.

Here’s hoping your adventures give you a chance to test every one of them, although hopefully not all at once.
