Probably 95% of the time, an existing product dressing up in new colors is not exactly big news.

But there are most definitely exceptions, especially when it comes to beloved products from iconic names such as Nike and Yeti

Like its three siblings, the new Santa Fe color treatment offers much more than attention-grabbing looks.

On that basis alone, the latest release from Leatherman — four new handle colorways of the bestselling Signal multi-tool — probably qualifies.

However, the brand really drops the hammer in that these new hues offer not only offer a different look but also a functional benefit.

Fight to the finish

For the record, the four new Signal colorways are dubbed Santa Fe (teal and orange), Nocturnal (dark navy), Mesa Verde (brown, light green and orange) and Tundrascape (navy, green and orange).

Considering the original Leatherman PST was available only in stainless steel, these treatments represent a huge aesthetic step forward from the early days of the brand.

The Cerakote treatment boosts the Signals’ lifespan on a number of levels, improving their wear resistance, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance and chemical resistance.

They also carry on a proud recent tradition of bold updates to other excellent Leatherman multi-tools, following in the footsteps of the Bond, Skeletool, Rebar and Micra

As with those releases, the source of the new Signals’ complexions goes far beyond looks.

They have all been skinned with Cerakote, an ultra-thin ceramic-based coating that, elsewhere, has been applied to everything from barbells to aluminum coffee mugs.

This treatment boosts the Signals’ durability and overall lifespan on a number of levels, improving their wear resistance, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance and chemical resistance.

It is worth noting that, as the Signal is one of Leatherman’s flagship products, this is not the first time it has received a Cerakote treatment.

Perhaps the most understated of the quartet, the Nocturnal colorway is nonetheless quite striking.

However, for the first time ever, each of the new editions comes with its own matching nylon sheath, as opposed to the black nylon sheath that all the others get.

Even as Cerakote’s profile rises, the new Signals can be purchased for the same price as some regular (non-Cerakote-treated) flavors.

Functions galore

Plus, as you may already know, from a usage standpoint, the Signal is an absolute banger.

Leatherman highlights 19 functions, comprehensively covering anything you could possibly need on an EDC basis and comporting itself pretty admirably in off-grid settings as well.

Those functions include two sets of pliers (needlenose and regular), wire cutters, hard-wire cutters and a wire stripper, bottle opener, can opener and carabiner.

One of the Signal’s most distinctive functions is one that is frustratingly uncommon — a hammer.

There’s also a 420HC combo knife, a saw, an awl with a thread loop, and a (rare) hammer.

You get a 1/4-inch hex bit drive, a bit driver, two box wrenches (1/4-inch and 3/16-inch), a ferrocerium rod, diamond-coated sharpener and a safety whistle, too.

Suffice it to say, the Cerakote treatment makes all the sense in the world, because you’ll want to keep this many-splendored multi-tool around and in action as long as humanly possible.
