My Favorite Thing About Leatherman Multi-Tools Has Nothing to Do with the Hardware

As solid as the brand’s exceptional EDC gear is, the best thing about this fan-favorite, time-tested brand is service-related.

Leatherman makes some of the best multi-tools around, period. I could wax poetic for hours about the number of times the brand’s products have come in handy.

Interestingly, however, my favorite thing about this fan-favorite, time-tested brand isn’t its EDC tools. Yes, they’re some of the most impressive, well-designed, durable and tough multi-tools on the market. Still, they’re not indestructible.

I believe the rare instances in which they break prove Leatherman’s greatest strength: its rock-solid warranty.

Wide-ranging, well-defined coverage

If you’ve ever tried dealing with brand warranties before, you probably haven’t been thrilled. Many brands have dubious language and highly limited coverage. Thankfully, that’s not the case with Leatherman.

Every Leatherman tool comes with an automatic 25-year warranty. If you sign up to be a Leatherman Insider, which is completely free, that coverage jumps to 40 years.

While it’s technically limited, the limitations are exceptionally reasonable. The brand won’t cover damage from abuse (like using a knife blade as a pry bar), alterations (like third-party tool or handle swaps), theft and loss (who’s to say you really lost it and aren’t just trying to get another one?) and a few others.

Any damage you incur during normal, reasonable use is eligible for coverage.

Some products and parts — accessories, sheaths, apparel and soft goods — are also not covered. Furthermore, limited-run items, like Leatherman Garage products, don’t qualify for full replacements (although the brand will do its best to repair them).

Admittedly, that sounds pretty limiting. But here’s the kicker: Any damage you incur during normal, reasonable use is eligible for coverage. Did you break your pliers when using them to ply? They’ll fix ’em. Was the screwdriver bit snapped from too much screwing? That’s covered. Maybe you chipped your knife blade while cutting. No problem.

Even if you’re unsure if the damage is covered, the brand has a simple form you can use to find out.

Leatherman’s confidence is your confidence

The wide-ranging warranty coverage should give you confidence in Leatherman’s products. The brand is so confident in its quality that it’s willing to go the extra mile to ensure that the ones you own stay in working order for two to four decades.

Leatherman also does it on its own dime — warranty claims are free of charge. The brand will even pay for shipping and handling if you use an “insured and trackable delivery service.”

That means you don’t have to be afraid to use your multi-tools to their full capabilities. You can rely on them to loosen the tightest of bolts, tighten the loosest of screws and even cut open the most overtaped of packages.

Look to the loyalists

It should come as no surprise that I am a Leatherman loyalist. I’ve had the pleasure of using many of the brand’s tools for years, and they have proven themselves time and time again. But I’m not alone.

Legions of EDCers, outdoor adventurers, craftspeople, artisans, mechanics, tacticians, emergency responders, law enforcement officers and others are similarly stoked about Leatherman. Many have proclaimed that they’ll keep turning to Leatherman when they need new multi-tools.

That phenomenon did not happen by chance. It happened because the brand makes superb products and backs them up when it counts.
