Leatherman is widely known for making some of the most versatile products around. A company emerging from one man’s determination to create the ultimate multi-tool now offers a range of iterations that can do just about anything.

Yes, MagnaCut is a very trendy steel right now, but there’s steak to back up the sizzle: It carries what most consider to be the ideal combo of edge retention, durability and corrosion resistance.

So it’s fitting that the brand would team up with perhaps the most versatile trio of brothers around. Over the past couple of decades, Chris, Keith and Dan Malloy have made their mark in everything from surf to film to music to gear.

Ironically, however, they’ve teamed up not on a multi-tool but a product at the exact opposite end of the sharp object spectrum: a fixed blade knife. That’s right, meet the Garage Batch #007: Malloy Special.

If that name doesn’t give it away, the first thing you need to know about this knife is that it’s emerging from the Garage, Leatherman’s offbeat release laboratory. If history is any indication, that means this limited-edition offering will sell out fast.

The second thing you need to know is that this knife spares no expense when it comes to premium materials. The handles are made of Micarta, a material offering a high level of resilience with a relatively minimal amount of weight. (The whole unit comes in at just 3.17 ounces.)

More notably, the 2.7-inch blade is made of MagnaCut. Yes, it’s a very trendy steel right now, but there’s steak to back up the sizzle: It carries what most consider to be the ideal combo of edge retention, durability and corrosion resistance.

Now, why did the bros opt for a fixed blade? In addition to surfing and filming, they are variously active in hunting, fishing and farming — and appreciate that a reliable fixed blade is an indispensable tool for tackling so many of the tasks associated with these pursuits.

“The Malloy Special is just that,” explains Chris. “A special blade with an unlimited amount of uses, from everyday life to when life gets real.”

You can use this knife — which features a lanyard hole and comes with a fine leather sheath for easy carry — to cut rope and wire, slice an apple and work with wood, sure. But it’ll also come in handy out in the backcountry should you find yourself in, you know, fight or flight type circumstances.

In other words, it may not be as versatile as, say, a Leatherman Arc, but depending where you put yourself, you’re sure to find plenty of “functions” for this trusty blade.

Availability and pricing

The Malloy Special is available now for $300. If you want one, act fast. Leatherman Garage offerings tend to sell out quite quickly.
