This Impossibly Affordable EDC Knife Is a Redesigned, Value-Packed Fan-Favorite

Knafs turned to crowdfunding to create the ultimate “first knife.” It’s an exceptionally solid design at an unbelievable price point.

For the last several years, Ben Petersen has been pretty busy. Before running EDC knife brand Knafs full time, he designed noteworthy cutting tools for other brands. Most notably, he designed the Civivi Baby Banter 6.

However, that stout cutting tool didn’t quench his thirst for small folders. So, he returned to the drawing board and, a few years later, crafted the insanely affordable Knafs Lander 5 — what could be one of the best starter knives of all time.

One of the Lander 5’s best features is its stoutness. It’s highly functional but also more legal to carry in more places.

The first cut

It’s no coincidence that I dubbed the Knafs Lander 5 a starter knife. That was Petersen’s entire intent. He wanted to create the ultimate “first knife” — a cutting tool folks new to EDC might start their collection (read: obsession) with.

This goal was born of Petersen’s personal history with EDC knives — he spent his teens in the Boy Scouts, acquiring scars (and skills) from Swiss Army Knives. However, with 14 years of knifemaking under his belt, he was finally ready to craft a knife design for kids like him.

But that isn’t as simple as sketching a pocketknife design. It required consideration and planning. Petersen had to craft a design that stood up to punishment, boasted worthwhile materials and mechanisms, and (most importantly) was affordable and approachable.

It makes sense that he turned to the Knafs Lander series. It’s a time-tested, fan-favorite design collection that makes the perfect starting point. However, what he managed with this one is all the more incredible.

Affordable and accessible

Take a look at the Lander 5 specs, and if you’re familiar with the EDC knife industry, you probably won’t be surprised. The materials and mechanisms might seem like standard fare, especially for affordable knives.

The blade is made from 8CR14MoV steel, and the handle is cold-forged 2Cr13 steel. It has a frame lock, reversible pocket clip and thumb hole deployment.

These are all solid and respectable features, if somewhat commonplace. But what Petersen has done with the pricing and accessibility is, in a word, bananas.

The Lander 5 is a jaw-dropping $25 […] unheard of for a quality cutting tool.

The Knafs Lander series starts at $45. That’s pretty affordable and reasonable for a budget-friendly knife. By contrast, the Lander 5 is a jaw-dropping $25. That’s a 44 percent price decrease, and it’s unheard of for a quality cutting tool.

Accounting for the materials alone (and not considering the clear design and construction quality), I’m not sure how Knafs has managed this. Perhaps it’s the size — the blade is 2.2 inches, and the overall length is 5.4. Even then, it’s insane.

The brand is aware of this insanity, stating, “Due to the changing economic climate (e.g., tariffs), this very likely will not be a $25 knife when it launches to the general public.”

Pricing and availability

The Knafs Lander 5 is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter, and the campaign has just a few days left. Thankfully, it has already crushed its goal more than ten times over.

As mentioned, the knife is priced at just $25. Even after the campaign ends, Knafs has it listed on its site for just $30.

It is anyone’s guess how long the brand can maintain these prices, especially in the wake of current tariffs.
