I’ve been writing about Kansept Knives for a long time now, and in doing so have really come to appreciate the talented designers they team up with and the unique knives that emerge.

As excellent as their materials and functionality tend to be, however, if I had to describe the brand in one word and my options were “classy” and “funky,” I would instinctively pick the latter — with a touch of “audacious” thrown in for good measure.

A blackwash-finished CPM 20CV blade and Fatcarbon Dark Matter Glow handle make the K1099V1 my favorite.

However, every once in a while they release a knife that not only delivers with its ingredients and construction but also makes my jaw drop a bit, as it does when I spot, say, a finely crafted dive watch.

That is where I am landing with the brand’s latest launch, the Quasar, which packs a bit of funk into a high style that makes me wonder whether it descended from the heavens to help us humble humans slice stuff whilst dripping with swag.

Slick silhouette

While there’s definitely some distinctive shaping to the bolster at the top of the handle, overall the Paul Munko-designed Quasar is pretty restrained by Kansept standards.

Overall the look is refreshing minimalist, enabling the knife’s form and function to organically deliver all you need for any EDC task.

My favorite of the eight variants features a CPM 20CV blade with a blackwash finish and a Fatcarbon Dark Matter Glow handle that recalls Carrara black marble in the best way.

While there are a number of materials to choose from (something I will get to down below), the essential elements of Quasar remain the same.

That means a not-inconsiderable 3.38-inch drop-point blade outfitted with a generous thumb slot for fidget-friendly thumb flick and reverse flick deployment.

Classy doesn’t have to be pricey. The variant on the left costs $105 while the one on the right costs $108.

The Quasar also carries my favorite style of lock, the cross bar, which is not only sturdy but also offers the side benefit of a third deployment option — plus the ability to retract the knife with just one hand.

The handle features some light ergonomics and enough length (4-plus inches) to fit comfortably in the hand, while a reversible clip lets you adjust to accommodate either pocket.

Lean or luxe?

Now, when it comes to materials, the Quasar truly runs the gamut with eight different treatments.

On the more affordable end are four options that cost between $105 and $120. While color schemes vary, all feature G10 of G-mascus handles and blades made of 154CM, a reliable budget steel.

Stepping way up in class are knives with carbon fiber twill or titanium handles, not to mention higher-quality knife steel such as CPM 20CV and Damascus.

Take a significant step up in price to $263 are three distinctly high-class offerings.

The K1099V3 variant features a blade made of Damascus steel — prized for its blend of edge retention and toughness — and a splashy titanium handle.

The K1099V2, meanwhile, swaps in a CPM 20CV steel blade and twill carbon fiber handle.

Then there’s my favorite, the K1099V1 (top of page), which features a CPM 20CV blade with a blackwash finish and Fatcarbon Dark Matter Glow handle that recalls Carrara black marble in the best way.

Sitting alone on the very top shelf is K1099V4, the only variant with a stonewashed titanium and timascus handle.

However, that’s not all. If you’ve really got cash to splash, the highest-end offering is the K1099V4, which also features a CPM 20CV blade offering excellent edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance.

Where it really stands out form the pack, however, is with the handle, which is made of an almost psychedelic stonewashed titanium and timascus blend.

Ahh, now that’s the funky, audacious knife brand we all know and love.
