Merrell’s Moab line has been a fixture in the outdoor world for over a decade. During that time, it has sold over 25 million pairs, and for good reason.

Our outdoor experts and experts at Switchback Travel, The Wirecutter, Outdoor Gear Lab and even GQ agree that the Moab line is the best budget hiking boot on the market.

Now, both the mid and standard version of the shoe are available in a new oyster/coyote and desert camo color combination for men and women.

Women also have access to a pinkish “Antler” camo color too.

The Moab That Looks Mil-Spec

We’ve seen camo patterns hit the Moab 3 before, but the patterns used were more hunting oriented.

Merrell isn’t a stranger to using camo.

They currently sell rain jackets with a more traditional camo look and the Jungle Moc slip-on with less conventional takes on the pattern.

They’ve even sold versions of the Moab 3 in camo patterns before. But those patterns, like Mossy Oak and Real Tree, leaned more toward hunting vibes.

This version’s combination of a more modern desert camo pattern and lighter sandy shading is easily the most military-inspired version of the icon we’ve ever seen.

Why the Moab 3 Waterpoof Stands Out

Merrell introduced a variety of updates to the Moab line with the launch of the Moab 3 in September 2022. It’s a much more environmentally friendly and more comfortable to wear.

The third generation of the Moab launched a little over two years ago and introduced some notable upgrades.

One of the most significant improvements revolved around the shoe’s environmental impact. The Moab 3 features 100% recycled laces, webbing and lining.

Merrell also improved the shoe’s feel and grip. A Vibram TC5+ outsole is non-marking and designed to balance traction, durability and flexibility. In the heel, the addition of new Air Cushion and Super Rebound offers a boost of extra shock absorption and stability.

This upgraded version is topped off by a waterproof membrane that keeps external moisture out while still venting heat and sweat.

Yes, it’s a little more expensive than its baseline counterpart, but it’s still a fantastic value compared to the rest of the market.
