Hoka is laser-focused on dominating the trails these days, especially when it comes to reissues.

Last fall, the brand reissued what my colleague Jack Seem dubbed “a masterclass in retro styling,” a.k.a the Tor Summit.

Just this May, the brand also revisited its mega-successful Speedgoat 2 with a stitch-for-stitch remake of the original 2017 release and created a new super-shoe style version of the oldest sneaker in the brand’s lineup in the form of the new Mafate X.

But the brand’s newest compelling release in the space isn’t a throwback. Instead, it’s an exclusive twist on one of the quirkiest shoes in Hoka’s lineup – the Mafate Three2.

The strange name nods to the fact that the Three2 is a blend of the Mafate Speed 2’s cushy bottom and the Mafate 3’s upper.

The newly released Mafate Three2 Grid JP adds a few new design elements to the strange hybrid trail lifestyle shoe, as well as an element of exclusivity that’s bound to fuel collecting hype.

It All Blends Together

You could say the new Mafate Three2 Grid JP now qualifies as a blend of a blend.

That’s because it’s inspired aesthetically by a Japanese market riff on the Tor Ultra Low known as the Tor Ultra Low JP.

Design-wise, the biggest differences between it an the original Mafate Three2 are all aesthetic.

The complete outline of the brand’s OG, Hoka One One branding, which was officially shortened to just “Hoka” at the end of 2021, is one throwback detail that’s bound to please long-time brand fans.

The old-school vibes continue to the inside of the shoe where the brand’s original logo can be spotted printed on the insoles in a nod to the theme of “hidden energy” according to Hypebeast.

Masters of Monochrome

Unlike the current standard Mafate Three2 lineup, which is distinguished by a mix of bold color combinations with contrasting outsole, the Mafate Three2 Grid JP leans heavily on monochromatic aesthetics.

Almost every version features a single shaded upper color matched to the outsole, resulting in a more cohesive, natural look.

A Shoe for Every Region

Regional distinctions add an extra layer of exclusivity to the Mafate Three2 Grid JP, which seems destined to make the trail shoe a popular listing on various sneaker resale sites soon.

The nearly neon yellow “yuzu/cardamom” version, exclusive to the U.S., is pretty much at the opposite end of the tonal spectrum.

In between those two options sits the “raw linen/sand” edition exclusive to the broader Asia market, as well as a “gull/pale dusk” version for the EMEA markets (a.k.a. Europe, the Middle East and Africa.)

Pricing and Availability

According to an Instagram post on Hoka’s Japanese regional account, every version of the trail shoe will go on sale starting June 13th. We don’t have links yet to the official retail product listings.

The same post also notes that the Japanese market will also receive limited runs of the other regions’ colors in addition to the country’s exclusive Olive / Eucalyptus option. So maybe that’s the best place to fly for anyone who has to collect them all.

Right now, Atmos-Tokyo already has details and listings up for each shoe, with a retail price of 29,700 yen or ~$205.
